Ten Things Thankful

1. Thank you for that moment yesterday when Four Year Old lying on the ground having fallen flat on his back from the monkey bar started moving his legs. Thank you for the other mothers around me who remained calm and knew exactly what to ask and what not to do. Thank you for letting me hear the relief in their laughter once Four Year Old started wriggling his feet. Thank you for letting me know he was cared about.

2. Thank you for sharing a laugh last night with my husband. Thank you for occasionally making him work late to remind me how much I want him to come home.

3. Thank you for my mom’s two week visit and the visual reminder of what unconditional love looks like.

4. Thank you for people who don’t know you and comment on your post with words such as: “This is beautifully written. As a counsellor who works with women who’ve experienced rape and other forms of abuse, and a mother of two daughters, it’s easy to lose sight of the vulnerability and sweetness of little boys. Thank you for reminding me.”

5. Thank you for Crazy Hair Day at school.

6. Thank you for for Four Year Old launching himself like a rocket to run to me after school and tell me that: “mommy, everybody liked my Show and Share!”. Thank you for having him whisper: “mommy, Colin wanted to touch my show and share!” (his show and share was a photo of him and his brother, you guys).

7. Thank you for having a cool badge that says “Read My Words on Queen Latifah.Com” and the words to go with it.

8. Thank you for the constant smile on One Year Old’s face replaced with the occasional thoughtfulness as he opens his mouth and leans towards me to hold my chin in his mouth when he kisses me.

9. Thank you discovering my dog’s nose in the left hand side of that photo of me I consider the embodiment of sadness. That reminded me that even when you’re super sad there’s always someone who cares right next to you, even if you don’t notice it.

10. Thank you Lizzi for putting such touching words out there in the blogosphere, ones that make the blogosphere feel much more concrete and humane and real and thank you for the reminder that it is filled with people, not just words. Thanks for inviting me to participate today.

Lizzi is a wonderful encourager. We are blessed to have met her here on the internet.

Oh, I know the fright you experienced at the playground. My then-4yo fell off the top of the playground slide and landed right on his back. It took everything I had not to scoop him up immediately. So, so scary. I’m glad you heard all those moms and was able to be patient, but mostly that he was ok after such a fall.

So many great things on your list. Thank you for linking up with us. Going around to see what makes everyone happy each week brightens my weekend.

  2. Wonderful post.
Oh man that vision of you witnessing the fall from the monkey bars takes me back to the time my son fell 5 feet from a tree onto his back. Time s l o w s down doesn’t it? “Please let him move. Please let him wriggle his feet.” Blessings it turned out well for them both …

  3. This made my heart warm and I don’t even have kids. Or husbands.
It’s beautiful you share your gratitude with the blogging world, I love reading your warm and soft, and often edgy and hilarious posts.
    !

  4. Love that list!! So relieved that your little one didn’t get hurt in the fall. Violet has fallen before as well, and my heart always skips a beat or ten until she starts crying and moving.

Love the bad hair day picture, your little girl does not look too happy though.. Or just not a morning person 😉

Hope you have a great weekend!!

Thanks so much, Stephanie. I was relieved too! It’s a little guy, actually, I know the hair makes it hard to tell… 😀 Hope you had a wonderful weekend as well. Kind of cold here, but I’m not complaining.

Thanks for a really touching list…loved the dog nose photo…so true. AND I want a crazy hair day at work now!

  6. Your posts put a sweet catch in my throat. Thanks for taking the time to reach out and share yourself…

  7. And thank you for linking up with us! My dog did the same thing when my site was hacked yesterday…..Think he understands how difficult it is. Thanks for sharing with us!

  8. I really appreciate this post. It embodied a lot of my own little moments for which I am so very thankful. I need to pay more attention to the tiny little boy hand covering his mouth to blow me a kiss and the from her toes laughs that barrel out of my daughter when she is with her girlfriends. This was a great reminder of that.

  9. I was just watching something about a study that shows that people who express gratitude on a regular basis lead happier lives. From this list, I would venture you’re pretty happy 🙂

I’ve heard that too. In a very dark time (when I was struggling with what I’ve described in the previous post) I’ve actually used the help of a life coach and she gave me this advice of creating a mental list before I go to bed every night of five GOOD things that happened that day. It was incredibly helpful. I don’t do it nearly as much as I should these days, but totally agree with your comment. I’m sure it’s conducive to a happier life.

  10. I ADORE the crazy hair day photo. What a countenance to take into school! So glad that he’s okay after his fall at the playpark. What a blessing to have other moms around you to keep you reassured.

Congrats on such wonderful writing gigs – your star is in the ascendent, and surely having a TToT post cements that 😉

Dog’s. Nose? Okay, I totally had to go back and look, and I’m afraid to say I even giggled when I saw it. I was too busy being rent by your words yesterday to even notice. But awesome that it’s there. Keeping it real, folks 😀

Love your list, and thank you for being so sweet as to include me *blush*

  11. Oh gosh, what a warm and lovely list! I loved all of what you wrote, seriously. Hope you will be linking up with us again!

  12. This is a fantastic list. So much said, so beautifully!

I loved this post. So so much.

  14. All wonderful observations and I especially love number 9. My dog is really my emotional whisperer. He knows when I’m down and a wee depressed. He’ll come and lay his head on my lap. Love him.

What an awesome idea for a post! Great list.

  16. Unconditional love and late laughs with your husband- great things to be happy for!

  17. Jean says:

Laughs with the husband are so wonderful.

Ah, those falls from the playground are so scary! My 5 year old once fell from the top of a slide right onto his back. I saw the whole thing, but couldn’t stop it. I’m glad you had some fast-thinking moms around to give you good advice. It’s hard to keep yourself from scooping the child up. I know. I scooped mine up.
I would love to have my mom visit for two weeks. Even as grownups, it’s nice to have our moms around.
    So many good things…

Laughing with my husband is one of my favorite, favorite things. I’m thankful we have shared so many laughs together. And Katia – that boy of yours has AWESOME hair.

    • Katia says:

Thank you, my friend. We just had a hair conversation this evening. He said something about most boys having short hair. I asked him if he wanted to cut his hair short. He said no, he wants me to put too much pony tails in it. Hmmm. OK. That’s how much he ended up enjoying crazy hair day 🙂

  20. What a beautiful list! It’s so scary when your child falls and you have that horrible instant when you don’t know if they are okay or not. I totally love Crazy Hair Day.

Of course, I had to go look at the dog’s nose photobombing your picture, and then I read the story that went with it. I’m so sorry for what you had to go through. Know that you’re not alone in how you felt.

    Have a lovely week!

  21. I hadn’t even noticed the dog nose. That’s kinda funny. I suppose there’s a silver lining in every cloud, huh?

  22. Island Mom says:

Thanks you for the mention and the lovely list! I just started blogging and love how it helps strangers touch our heart. I’m now reading all your blogs and really enjoying your voice.

It was my pleasure, it was truly one of the best comments I’d ever gotten on my blog. Still getting around to visiting yours, but I’ll make it! Promise!

  24. Katia, you had to be freaking out like crazy at the playground! OMG, to see your child just lying there … how terrible! It really is a wonder how the support and words of others can be calming and so necessary to our sanity at times. I’m happy everything turned out alright. You know, your posts always are so sensitive in nature. I’m a joker, but almost feel wrong in joking here. Your goodness shines through. Well done!

  25. outoneear says:

Lovely list. Beautifully written. The playground incident had me on the edge of my seat. Glad all is well. I could do crazy hair day at school–every day!

    • Katia says:

Thank you so much, that’s incredibly kind. I’m glad it worked out well too. 🙂 And yes, crazy hair day should be mandatory, everywhere. Once a week. 🙂

  26. Shoes Summerfield says:

Thank you. for reminding us all to be grateful for *everything*. I’ve been attempting more (much more) gratitude in my life, and it isn’t always easy, nor is it natural…but it sure does feel good. Moreover, it’s good to read from others as well!!

    • Katia says:

I completely agree with every word, including what you said about reading other people’s gratitudes which is strangely powerful. Thank you so much!
