Ten Things Thankful

1. Thank you for that moment yesterday when Four Year Old lying on the ground having fallen flat on his back from the monkey bar started moving his legs. Thank you for the other mothers around me who remained calm and knew exactly what to ask and what not to do. Thank you for letting me hear the relief in their laughter once Four Year Old started wriggling his feet. Thank you for letting me know he was cared about.
2. Thank you for sharing a laugh last night with my husband. Thank you for occasionally making him work late to remind me how much I want him to come home.
3. Thank you for my mom’s two week visit and the visual reminder of what unconditional love looks like.
4. Thank you for people who don’t know you and comment on your post with words such as: “This is beautifully written. As a counsellor who works with women who’ve experienced rape and other forms of abuse, and a mother of two daughters, it’s easy to lose sight of the vulnerability and sweetness of little boys. Thank you for reminding me.”
5. Thank you for Crazy Hair Day at school.
6. Thank you for for Four Year Old launching himself like a rocket to run to me after school and tell me that: “mommy, everybody liked my Show and Share!”. Thank you for having him whisper: “mommy, Colin wanted to touch my show and share!” (his show and share was a photo of him and his brother, you guys).
7. Thank you for having a cool badge that says “Read My Words on Queen Latifah.Com” and the words to go with it.
8. Thank you for the constant smile on One Year Old’s face replaced with the occasional thoughtfulness as he opens his mouth and leans towards me to hold my chin in his mouth when he kisses me.
9. Thank you discovering my dog’s nose in the left hand side of that photo of me I consider the embodiment of sadness. That reminded me that even when you’re super sad there’s always someone who cares right next to you, even if you don’t notice it.
10. Thank you Lizzi for putting such touching words out there in the blogosphere, ones that make the blogosphere feel much more concrete and humane and real and thank you for the reminder that it is filled with people, not just words. Thanks for inviting me to participate today.

Oh, I know the fright you experienced at the playground. My then-4yo fell off the top of the playground slide and landed right on his back. It took everything I had not to scoop him up immediately. So, so scary. I’m glad you heard all those moms and was able to be patient, but mostly that he was ok after such a fall.

Oh man that vision of you witnessing the fall from the monkey bars takes me back to the time my son fell 5 feet from a tree onto his back. Time s l o w s down doesn’t it? “Please let him move. Please let him wriggle his feet.” Blessings it turned out well for them both …

Love that list!! So relieved that your little one didn’t get hurt in the fall. Violet has fallen before as well, and my heart always skips a beat or ten until she starts crying and moving.

I really appreciate this post. It embodied a lot of my own little moments for which I am so very thankful. I need to pay more attention to the tiny little boy hand covering his mouth to blow me a kiss and the from her toes laughs that barrel out of my daughter when she is with her girlfriends. This was a great reminder of that.

I was just watching something about a study that shows that people who express gratitude on a regular basis lead happier lives. From this list, I would venture you’re pretty happy 🙂
I’ve heard that too. In a very dark time (when I was struggling with what I’ve described in the previous post) I’ve actually used the help of a life coach and she gave me this advice of creating a mental list before I go to bed every night of five GOOD things that happened that day. It was incredibly helpful. I don’t do it nearly as much as I should these days, but totally agree with your comment. I’m sure it’s conducive to a happier life.
I ADORE the crazy hair day photo. What a countenance to take into school! So glad that he’s okay after his fall at the playpark. What a blessing to have other moms around you to keep you reassured.

All wonderful observations and I especially love number 9. My dog is really my emotional whisperer. He knows when I’m down and a wee depressed. He’ll come and lay his head on my lap. Love him.

Ah, those falls from the playground are so scary! My 5 year old once fell from the top of a slide right onto his back. I saw the whole thing, but couldn’t stop it. I’m glad you had some fast-thinking moms around to give you good advice. It’s hard to keep yourself from scooping the child up. I know. I scooped mine up.
I would love to have my mom visit for two weeks. Even as grownups, it’s nice to have our moms around.

Thank you, my friend. We just had a hair conversation this evening. He said something about most boys having short hair. I asked him if he wanted to cut his hair short. He said no, he wants me to put too much pony tails in it. Hmmm. OK. That’s how much he ended up enjoying crazy hair day 🙂

Katia, you had to be freaking out like crazy at the playground! OMG, to see your child just lying there … how terrible! It really is a wonder how the support and words of others can be calming and so necessary to our sanity at times. I’m happy everything turned out alright.
